What is Oswald and what is Henry?
- Oswald is the editorial AI assistant. It drafts Horizons, proposes Update Request responses, and reviews assets against the brand record. Available on Guardian. Used by the brand owner.
- Henry is the read-only AI assistant. It answers questions about the brand record for whoever has the right to read it. Available on Keeper and Guardian. Used by the team. Uses a customer-supplied API key (BYOK).
Why two assistants instead of one?
Editing the brand record is authorship work and belongs with the brand owner. Reading the brand record is access work and is needed by every team member. Separating the two reflects the difference; conflating them would either over-empower the team or under-serve them. What AI model is Oswald built on?
Anthropic Claude on a vendor-hosted enterprise tier. The underlying model can change over time; the product Oswald (with its own system prompt, brand-record grounding, and workflows) stays consistent. See AI Usage & Disclosure Policy. What AI model is Henry built on?
Whichever model the customer chooses through their BYOK provider:- OpenAI (typically GPT-4-class or newer).
- Gemini (typically Gemini 1.5 Pro or newer).
Does my data train the AI?
No. Both Oswald and Henry use API tiers that do not train on customer content:- Oswald. Anthropic enterprise API does not use API content for training.
- Henry. Both OpenAI’s and Gemini’s enterprise API tiers do not use API content for training. Brand Atlas uses these tiers.
Why is Henry BYOK and Oswald is not?
Two cost models with different reasons:- Oswald is bundled into Guardian because Oswald is integral to the Guardian product. We make Guardian work for editorial work; bundling the AI is part of that.
- Henry is BYOK because team-side usage scales with team size in ways that would be hard to price flatly. BYOK lets the Keeper subscription stay $79/mo while letting heavy users pay only for what they use.
How much does Henry cost in practice?
Most teams: 20 per month at current provider rates. Heavy teams may see 60. The exact figure depends on team size, question volume, model choice, and provider rates. See Costs and rate limits for working estimates.Where is my API key stored?
In Supabase Vault, encrypted at rest with libsodium. Decrypted only in memory when needed to make an API call. Never written to disk. Never logged. See How your key is stored and the BYOK Policy. Can Oswald change my brand record without asking me?
No. Every change Oswald drafts requires explicit brand-owner approval. The apply step has its own confirmation. There is no configuration that bypasses this. See Oswald deep dive. Can Henry edit anything?
No. Henry is read-only at three layers: in its system prompt, in the tools it is given, and at the application layer. Even an adversarial prompt cannot get Henry to write. See Henry deep dive. Can the team see what Henry told other team members?
No. Each team member’s Henry conversations are private to them and visible to the brand owner. Other team members do not see each other’s conversations. Will Oswald cite where its drafts come from?
Yes. Oswald’s drafts include reasoning explaining which sections of the brand record informed the draft. Updates and Horizons drafted by Oswald carry an attribution note (“drafted by Oswald, approved by [brand owner]”) in the brand record’s history. Can I see what Oswald reads?
Yes. Each Oswald session shows the read confirmation step: what sections, Horizons, and history Oswald accessed before drafting. The full audit is in the brand record’s history. What happens if my AI provider has an outage?
Henry stops responding until the provider recovers. There is no automatic failover. For teams with low tolerance for downtime, Switching providers covers setting up a tested failover. Can I disable Oswald or Henry?
Yes. Settings → AI → Oswald (or Henry). Toggle off. The assistant becomes unavailable. Brand record content is unchanged; nothing is deleted; you can re-enable later.Do you use AI to write the docs?
No. Brand Atlas’s own documentation is human-written. We use the same voice rules and the same atlas-like discipline; the writing itself is human. The same is true of marketing copy. What if I do not want any AI involved in my brand?
Choose Scout. Scout has no AI features. The atlas works without Henry or Oswald; the editorial loop happens through Update Requests and the brand owner’s own editing.Related pages
